National Training Manager - Melbourne
“I just love talking to people and helping them solve problems with their lifting, rigging, or recovery situations”.
After leaving year 12 in Brisbane I took on and completed an apprenticeship as a Panel Beater/Spray Painter, but soon realised Idid not want to stay in that industry for long and started with Bullivants in 1982 as a junior Wire Rope Splicer. It seemed like an interesting industry and I learnt a lot over the next several years including all facets of production, press operations making wire rope slings, chain slings, socketing, and also the testing and onsite lifting gear inspection processes. I then moved onto field service work which included installation of wire ropes on chair lifts, mine sites, and cranes, before moving into a variety of sales roles both internal and externally.
I just loved talking to people and helping them solve problems with their lifting, rigging, or recovery situations.
As National Training Manager now I have the opportunity to give back to the business and to the new people as they come in and grow. We deliver training courses in Safe Use of Lifting Equipment, Working at Heights Awareness, Safe use of Overhead Cranes, Load restraint and Recovery of Mobile Equipment as well as internal courses on our technical processes.
One of the good things about Bullivants is we are such a diverse company with the goods and services we offer and the variety of markets we service. It’s always fresh and even though people say “same company for that long!”, I always tell them, “I love getting out of bed and coming to work”, whether it’s helping train sales people or technical staff or training end users anywhere across Australia, it’s very satisfying to know you shared a skill or maybe saved a life or prevented an accident from occurring.
My aim is to help people at all levels in Bullivants to build careers and customers to stay with us as a preferred supplier.
I really enjoy my job.
Warehouse Manager - Mackay
“With help from the brilliant internal and external training offered by Bullivants I was able to gain promotion to Warehouse Manager in just over 18 months”.
I started my working life in the stationery industry beginning with a customer service and stores focus. As I developed my skills I turned towards purchasing, inventory management and operations of the store. I heard about a job opportunity at Bullivants from a friend who really sold me on the excellent team, a supporting and enjoyable working environment and the opportunities for career advancement. When I started as the Warehouse Supervisor in 2008 I found this to be true and more! With help from the brilliant internal and external training offered by Bullivants I was able to gain promotion to Warehouse Manager in just over 18 months.
One of the best things I find about working at Bullivants is the lifting and rigging industry itself, it’s quite engaging technically I find there is always something new to learn. My involvement with the warehouse and as a NATA signatory for the branch means I have to stay up to date with changes in
the industry and new products and solutions available to us.
In my current role as Warehouse Manager I am responsible for the long term operations of the warehouse and production team. The team is 11 members strong and I manage them along with the warehouse supervisor to achieve the monthly and annual goals of the branch while promoting constant improvement in our safe and productive work environment. Working with my team I am also able to promote a culture where hard work, smart thinking and safety initiatives are recognised and rewarded.
Outside of my team I work closely with the other departments at the branch, head office, suppliers, and customers directly, to ensure that Bullivants is providing the best level of quality and service possible and that we are prepared for future developments in the industry to ensure our continued success.
While I am currently personally invested in developing my branch at Bullivants and improving my
skills as a manager, I know that should I wish to take the next step there are always great career opportunities within Bullivants and the broader Wesfarmers Industrial and Safety division as a whole.
Branch Manager - Bunbury
“I have only just begun to scratch the surface of what Bullivants has to teach me and I see the road ahead continuing to challenge and inspire me”.
I have spent all of my working career in various customer service roles, having begun part time at the age of 14 and I am just as passionate about good customer service now as I was back then. I spent the last 17 years within the industrial and mining supply industry including nearly 8 years with our sister company Blackwoods. I have held both internal and external roles and enjoyed each and every one.
I joined the Bullivants team in November 2006 looking for a new challenge. As a specialist company, Bullivants certainly offers exactly that, with new challenges presenting themselves almost daily. Being a specialised company in our chosen field allows us to focus our knowledge and experience to offer our customers the best possible solution for their application. There is something very rewarding about making a recommendation and having the customer take your advice.
As the Customer Service Supervisor in a relatively small branch, my role is varied from phone and counter service to inventory management and staff training. Having recently been put forward for the Frontline Leadership training, I am becoming more involved in the safety and branch management aspects of our business. You never know, one day I might be ready to take on the ‘comfy chair’.
I love being on the frontline with customers, building strong relationships to keep them coming back again and again. In tough economic times, it is important to have a good strong relationship with your customers, often it’s the reason they come to you and not the opposition. Some days are a juggling act, trying to prioritise what I need to do first, but communication with my customers is the key. I try to make all my customers feel that they are the most important person in the world and they have my undivided attention. Whether they are spending $5 or $5000 makes no difference, everyone deserves good service. You never know, the customer you are selling $5.00 worth of hardware to, may be the head of a multi-million dollar company fixing up his holiday home.
I have only just begun to scratch the surface of what Bullivants has to teach me and I see the road ahead continuing to challenge and inspire me and I look forward to being a part of Bullivants as it continues to evolve and grow for many years.
